Motion’s Wollongong facility has taken a significant leap forward in service capability with the addition of a new high-performance gasket cutter. This advanced equipment enhances Motion’s ability to support industries requiring fast, reliable gasket solutions.
As Luke Kerwin, National Manufacturing & Services Manager at Motion, explains, the Wollongong operation serves as the company’s engineering headquarters for New South Wales, offering a range of services including cylinder repair, fabrication, and hydraulic systems. “Wollongong is a critical hub for us, and the addition of the gasket cutter expands our ability to quickly produce custom-cut gaskets for the local market,” he says.

Precision and speed The new cutter is designed to provide rapid turnaround times without compromising on quality. According to Luke, this is a game-changer for customers facing urgent demands. “We can offer same-day manufacture and dispatch locally for Wollongong and the surrounding market,” he notes. “The real advantage is speed – being able to respond quickly when customers need solutions fast.” The capability to digitise customer samples and produce precise gaskets on demand is particularly valuable. Luke elaborates, “Customers can bring in a sample, and we can quickly digitise it, manufacture the gasket, and have it ready within hours. This minimises downtime for our customers, especially when they’re facing critical repairs.” Supporting diverse industries The new equipment is set to benefit a wide array of industries, including oil and gas, petrochemical, fuel production, original equipment manufacturers, and pipe fabricators. “These industries often operate under tight timelines, where a delay in receiving a gasket can halt entire operations,” Luke says. For instance, he describes a typical scenario where a local business might require a gasket urgently to repair equipment. “A customer might bring in a sample in the morning, and we can have the replacement manufactured and ready for dispatch within two hours,” he says. This level of responsiveness is crucial for avoiding extended downtime and maintaining operational efficiency.
Nationwide coverage and sustainability
While Wollongong now offers local customers faster access to gasket solutions, the benefits extend beyond the region. Motion’s east and west coast facilities, including one in Perth and a full manufacturing facility in Brisbane, create a nationwide network that ensures consistent service across Australia. “With two locations on the east coast and one on the west, we can support customers nationwide, providing a full range of services wherever they’re needed,” Luke explains.
Sustainability is another key consideration. By reducing material waste and optimising production processes, the new cutter contributes to Motion’s broader environmental goals. “Efficiency and sustainability go hand in hand with this technology. It’s about doing more with less and supporting our customers’ efforts to operate responsibly,” Luke says.
Meeting customer expectations
Luke emphasises that the cutter is part of Motion’s commitment to staying ahead of industry needs. “Whether it’s same-day manufacturing or custom solutions, we aim to provide a service that exceeds expectations,” he says. “This investment reflects our dedication to innovation and our customers’ success.”
Looking ahead, Motion is poised to leverage this technology to drive further improvements. As Luke summarises: “The new gasket cutter exemplifies what we’re about – delivering solutions that are fast, precise, and tailored to our customers’ needs. It’s a great addition to what we already offer at Wollongong and a testament to our focus on continuous improvement.”
With the new gasket cutter operational, customers across New South Wales can look forward to a level of service that combines speed and precision.
