Mining sites are punishing places. From hydraulic hoses that twist through compact machine envelopes to belts that drive heavy equipment in extreme temperatures, every component has to work harder than most. For Motion, one of the most trusted names across both fluid power and power transmission is Gates.
“Downtime is expensive, especially on mine sites,” says Paul Cavicchiolo, Category Manager for Hydraulic Hose and Connectors at Motion. “The Gates portfolio gives us high-performance options across the board – so we’re not just solving a single problem. We’re improving uptime, reliability and efficiency at the system level.”
On the fluid power side, Gates’ MXG™ 4K and 5K hydraulic hoses are built to exceed industry standards. Featuring the patented Xpiral™ woven spiral construction, they’re lighter, stronger, and significantly more flexible than traditional spiral hoses – while still delivering high pressure, high impulse performance.
“These hoses were designed with mining and heavy industry in mind,” explains Arshad Ashroff, Product Manager for Industrial Fluid Power at Gates Australia. “They require up to 40% less force to bend, making installation faster and safer. And the XTP cover we use provides 25 times better abrasion resistance than conventional options – which means longer life in the field.”
That’s no small benefit on busy mine sites, where hoses can see thousands of flex cycles and often rub against machinery. The MXG range is also MDG41-certified, meets FRAS and MSHA standards, and helps cut freight and handling costs due to its lighter weight.
“When you consider that a typical loader or dozer contains 60 metres or more of hose, that weight saving adds up fast,” says Cavicchiolo.

The benefits don’t stop at fluid power. On the mechanical side, Gates’ Predator® V-belts offer unmatched drive performance in a smaller footprint – capable of transmitting up to 2.2 times more power than conventional V-belts of the same size.
“These belts are ideal for mining sites because they’re built for tough conditions – high shock loads, heat, oil contamination, dust,” says Rob Michelson, Motion’s Product Manager for Belts. “They also help reduce overhung loads and eliminate the need for costly custom pulleys, which makes them a smart upgrade path.”
The Predator® belt's bareback cover is ideal for clutching drive, while the aramid tensile cords resist stretching and breakage even in high-load applications. Combined, these features deliver a maintenance-free solution that significantly outperforms traditional V-belts.
And when it comes time for service, Gates has that covered too.
Their Power Transmission Maintenance Kits, available through Motion, give fitters all the tools they need to install, align, and maintain belt drives correctly – from tension testers and gauges to laser alignment tools and the Sonic Tension Meter.
“We know from experience that more than half of all belt drive failures are due to incorrect installation,” says Rosynes Hernandez, Technical Specialist at Gates. “The maintenance kits eliminate guesswork and ensure longer belt life and fewer breakdowns.”
Each kit is neatly packed in a rugged case, making it easy for technicians to bring best-practice tools to any site. Training is also available in partnership with Motion, ensuring that every technician – whether experienced or new – knows exactly how to get the most out of Gates' products.
“Ultimately, it’s about value for the customer and end user,” says Cavicchiolo. “We’re not just looking for components that tick a box. We want solutions that last longer, install faster, and perform better and for longer in mining environments. Gates helps us deliver exactly that.”
