Faster hose turnaround for food and beverage uptime

Food and beverage plants run on tight schedules, strict hygiene controls, and relentless washdown routines. When a hose fails, the cost is rarely just the hose – it is lost production, rushed maintenance, and added risk. Motion has been strengthening its fluid power capability to help sites respond faster, specify correctly, and keep critical lines running reliably.

Stronger Fluid Power Support for Food and Beverage

Motion has been investing in a stronger hose and fluid power offering for food and beverage customers across Australia and New Zealand. The focus is practical: faster turnaround on hose assemblies, access to higher-performing hose options suited to washdown environments, and better technical support so the right hose is specified the first time.

“From a customer outcome point of view, it means broader access to premium products and a sales team with a deeper understanding of the solutions – so customers can be guided to the best decision,” says Matt Pembroke, General Manager Customer Relationship Excellence at Motion.

Premium hose options for washdown realities

Washdown conditions place specific demands on hose construction, cover materials, and fittings – especially where hygiene requirements are high and downtime windows are short. Motion’s expanded range includes premium European hose options aimed at hygienic and washdown-prone applications, giving customers access to solutions that can better handle wet, chemical-intensive environments.

Pembroke says the objective is to give customers a package that can genuinely compete on performance, backed by scalable supply and technical confidence.

From hose assembly to asset visibility

For many sites, the challenge is not only sourcing a replacement hose – it is managing a whole fleet of hoses, each with different duties, ages, and risk profiles. Motion’s hose assembly capability is positioned as an end-to-end offer: fabricate, assemble, test, certify, and support ongoing inspection and recertification planning.

A key part of that approach is hose asset visibility. Motion can support customers with a hose management program that tracks hose assemblies through unique identifiers and recorded test data. Each assembly becomes a traceable asset, helping maintenance teams plan inspections and manage compliance requirements more systematically.

Shorter lead times, less downtime pressure

When a failure occurs, lead time becomes a reliability issue. Motion’s strengthened operational capability is intended to reduce turnaround times for custom hose assemblies and improve dispatch responsiveness – helping sites return equipment to service faster.

Just as important is avoiding “near-miss” specifications that fail early. Pembroke notes that on-site support on the sales side helps ensure the correct hose and fittings are selected for the duty, from pressure and temperature through to chemical exposure, bend radius, and hygiene constraints.

And what’s true of Motion in Australia is also true in New Zealand. Gavin Halse, Manufacturing Compliance Manager, says many traditional hose failure drivers in New Zealand food and beverage plants have been reduced by taking a more application-led approach from the outset. “Many of the drivers or causes of hose failure within the New Zealand food and beverage industry have been minimised or even eliminated due to a concerted effort by Motion Fluid Power Solutions in New Zealand to understand each application and deliver a hose assembly engineered to withstand the rigours,” he says.

Halse says best-practice hose management in New Zealand centres on testing, traceability, and using data to get ahead of failures. “Motion Fluid Power Solutions in New Zealand upload test results of every assembly they manufacture into the Exaro Hose Management Program,” he says. “Where higher failure rates do occur, the system allows the user to predict and replace ahead of time, thus minimising any production outages.”

Consistency for multi-site operators

For national food and beverage brands operating across multiple sites, inconsistent supply and varied specifications can create unnecessary risk. Motion’s scale allows a more uniform hose and fluid power offer across regions, supported by local capability and common standards.

As Halse puts it, “It is this combination of industry experience, proven systems, and tried-and-tested products that has assisted New Zealand’s food producers in becoming world-leading in efficiency and quality. Improved reliability, improved safety, reduced running costs. All measures of success!”
