A hose ready for the wet season

As northern Australia enters another wet season, Motion is helping sites stay ahead of rising water with a new heavy-duty dewatering hose and end-to-end hydraulic and engineering support designed for rapid mobilisation in flooding conditions.

Built for Wet Season Demands: Heavy-Duty Dewatering You Can Rely On

When heavy rain hits northern Australia, the effects on industry are immediate. Flooded access roads, water-logged work areas and submerged equipment can bring operations to a standstill within hours. For mine sites, civil contractors and pump-hire specialists, managing water quickly and safely is essential to protecting productivity and maintaining site safety.

This year, Motion is strengthening wet-season preparedness with a new large-bore dewatering hose – part of its expanding Optima® range – designed to handle high volumes, tough terrains and rapid deployment when water levels rise.

“Standard water suction hoses simply aren’t built for the conditions our customers are dealing with,” explains Matt Pembroke, National Sales Manager at Motion. “They often lack the pressure rating and cover thickness needed for large-scale dewatering. That leads to premature wear, burst failures and expensive downtime – especially in the wet season.”

A hose built for Australian flood conditions

Motion’s new Optima® Heavy Duty NBR Layflat Hose has been engineered specifically to withstand the demands of dewatering, bypass pumping and flood response.

Constructed with a high-tensile textile cord reinforcement, a smooth NBR inner tube, and a ribbed NBR cover, it offers durability and resistance that standard hoses cannot match. Rated to a 3:1 safety factor and suitable for temperatures from –20°C to +70°C, the hose manages heavy loads and harsh environments with confidence.

“This hose is designed for big pumps, big volumes and big pressures,” says Pembroke. “Civil contractors, mine dewatering teams and major infrastructure operators use this hose every day – it’s not a niche product. But for the broader market, availability has always been a challenge. Stock is limited, lead times are long, and failures during the wet season can be costly.”

By making this Optima hose available to customers, Motion is helping address that gap.

Ready when emergencies strike

In flood events, mobilising equipment fast can mean the difference between a managed response and major damage. The new hose is designed for rapid deployment and seamless integration with high-volume pumps.

“Our layflat assemblies arrive fully ready to go,” Pembroke explains. “If you’re clearing a flooded basement, a carpark or a site access road, you don’t have a week to wait for a workshop to build a hose. You need a solution that’s on the shelf and ready to connect.”

Beyond hose supply – full wet-season support

Motion’s dewatering capabilities extend far beyond hose assemblies. Its Fluid Power Solutions and Engineering & Services teams contribute significantly to wet-season readiness through pump repairs, pump relining, hydraulic system support and on-site troubleshooting.

“It’s a holistic offer,” says Pembroke. “Motion can help with the hose, the fittings, the pump servicing – everything needed to keep water moving. When the wet season hits, that integrated capability is incredibly valuable to our customers.”

The company’s expanding range of Optima® branded hoses and its investment in specialised dewatering solutions also reflect a growth in demand.

“Large-bore, high-pressure hoses are becoming more popular because they’re safer and align with new site specifications,” Pembroke notes. “Many mines and contractors are moving away from older coupling styles toward flange-connected assemblies that offer better reliability and OHS benefits.”

Available soon

The new hose line is available right now in store for immediate despatch. Motion anticipates strong demand, particularly from pump-hire companies, civil contractors and northern operations preparing for early dry-season works.

“As rainfall becomes less predictable, the need for dependable dewatering solutions has only grown,” Pembroke says. “Our focus is on giving customers durable, high-capacity hose options that protect equipment, reduce downtime and help keep sites safe.”
